House move from Mayo to Manchester – P. Cregg
“My husband and I were relocating back to the UK after 25 years in Mayo, so we were apprehensive about the size of the task ahead of us; but Fintan came to the house and immediately put us at ease with his relaxed friendly approach. We were worried about how all our stuff would fit in one van, but he was very confident and as it turned out we did not need to worry! On the day of the move, he was right on schedule and worked tirelessly and efficiently to ensure that all our belongings were safely and securely packed away. Then less than 24 hours later in Manchester he unpacked the contents with the help of my two sons in around 1 hour – they couldn’t believe how quick he worked! Overall, he took away all the stress of the relocation and made the transition back to the UK very smooth. It was well worth the very reasonable price for his services – to think we were going to do it all ourselves…what were we thinking!”

KEEPING IT TOGETHER – IKEA
I am having my IKEA moment. It was bound to come. I had to stop visiting the IKEA store near my mother’s home in London because it caused a sort of hysterical rash brought about by too much choice. I would do that scary walk-around wanting-everything tour, gathering dirt cheap, stylish, portable furnishings en route. Oh look – a plastic stool for 50p. Oh look – a cute table lamp for £1. A bag of 1,000 candles for 10p – I’ll have those. By the time I reached the till I was puce with excitement and a sort of heightened sense that my whole life was going to change irrevocably because of the two piled trolley of purchases I was struggling to push. I would have to throw out all of crockery to make room for the 90 plain white polish plates for 5p each, I’d have to strip and polish the floors to show off all the new rugs – actually, come to think of it, I’d need to buy a new house with new windows for the mountain of muslin blinds. After a full day in there, by the time I reached the checkout I would get an empty feeling of futility bought on by extreme consumer indulgence, and start to edit my purchases. “CD-rack? Don’t need that. More cushions? Don’t need them. Set of three vases? Not necessary.”
On more than one occasion I would simply abandon the trolley, despairingly cram two Swedish hot-dogs in the yawning “having-shopped-and failed” space in my stomach, before crawling out in the London rain, empty handed, to try and find a taxi along the characterless stretch of dual-carriageway that IKEA stores invariably inhabits.
And so, I have avoided the new Dublin IKEA like heroin, but as an addict, it was only a matter of time before it crept into my life again.
“We need cupboards for the back room,” I said to Niall. The back room is the family ‘Play Room’ – and as in all modern houses, that means Wii, computer, cable telly, DVD, stereos etc. Because it where the children play, we dump all our rubbish there turning it a non-safe “play” area – especially with the baby. Of course he hares in there at every opportunity to shake the bottles on the precarious, flimsy “bar”, and get the four teeth stuck in for a good chew on the trailing, live electric cables.
“We need cupboards, cheap ones.” We looked into every option and in the end, it was, of course, IKEA. “No,” I said, “I can’t do it.” Then he downloaded the catalogue onto my laptop and I started to flick. Oh my God – here it was again – the opportunity, the promise that I could transform my life – all I needed was the right shelves. I could keep all that pointless miscellaneous crap that it crowding my life by simply hiding them away in MDF cabinets. The children’s rooms could be transmogrified into wonderlands with special display areas for their “art” and storage systems with brightly coloured plastic buckets which, somehow, look so much more appealing than the brightly coloured plastic buckets I have already filled their rooms with from the €2 shop. And it’s all so cheap that we can decorate the play room, and afford a new flat screen telly, with a built in DVD and get a man in to paint it first, and oooh! …. that rug would look great under the pool table and it’s only €30 – and next thing I knew the day was gone and I had refurnished the whole house using the deadly “save and print shopping list” facility on the website.
Of course, what has saved me is the fact that we live in Mayo, and would have to hire a van – and endure the horrendous palaver of driving across the country, then the two of us would surely have a nasty row bought on my compulsive pottering, and the kids would be bored out of their minds and we’d have to placate them with Swedish hot dogs and all that – no, we’ll leave it – too hard.
EXCEPT that somebody showed me an ad for www.onemanandhisvan.com in The Western People. I contacted them for a quote and it seems Fintan will go to IKEA with my list, buy everything and transport it down for €100. “One trolley load” he calculated my purchases at.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when I got the terrifyingly reasonable quote. He has made IKEA possible from the comfort of my own home. New novel? Who cares! Another femail column? What a bore. Hungry, tired children? For the past week it has been – shut-up and go away the lot of you – Mummy is trawling through the website seeing how many combinations of shelves, sheets and sets of three vases she can fit onto an IKEA trolley.
